A novidade para 2018 dos vinhos Mira do Ó é… um Bucelas. Este vale nebuloso é casa de um “terroir” especial e de uma região demarcada com mais de 100 anos, muito afamada noutros tempos por produzir brancos de grande qualidade. Aliás, nesta pequena região (com apenas cerca de 160 hectares de vinha) só é mesmo possível produzir brancos, isto é, se lhes quisermos chamar DOC Bucelas. E dentro destes brancos só podem figurar três castas: Arinto (numa percentagem mínima de 75% do lote), Rabo de Ovelha e Sercial (aquele que é mais conhecido nos vinhos na Madeira e que já quase não se encontra na sua provável região de origem, onde é conhecido por Esgana-Cão). O clima de Bucelas é muito particular, com grandes oscilações térmicas, teores de humidade muito elevados, nevoeiros frequentes pela manhã e sol forte, durante a tarde, a reflectir nas margas calcárias, que dominam os solos.

The novelty for 2018 of Mira do Ó wines is … a “Bucelas”. This foggy valley is home to a quite special “terroir” and a region with more than 100 years of DOC appellation, very famous in past times, for producing high quality white wines. In fact, in this small region (with just about 160 hectares of vineyards) it is only possible to produce whites, that is, if we want to call them DOC Bucelas. And within these whites only three varieties can be included: Arinto (in a minimum of 75% of the blend), Rabo de Ovelha and Sercial (the one that is mostly known in Madeira wines and that is almost extinct in the region where it was born, and where it is known as Esgana-Cão). The climate of Bucelas is quite particular, with great thermal fluctuations, very high humidity, frequent morning fog and strong afternoon sun reflecting on the limestones, which dominate the soils.

Por tudo isto, e não só, Bucelas esteve sempre na MIRA e a vontade de reinterpretar a região, por tudo aquilo que foi e tudo o que poderia ser, foi sempre inquietante…

Este vinho é feito com Arinto de duas pequenas vinhas. Uma vinha de várzea numa zona muito fresca com solos argilo-calcários profundos e outra de encosta mais calcária e solarenga. É uma abordagem crua ao “terroir” único desta região que revisita uma vinificação artesanal, despida de tecnologia e que procura a expressão mais pura do Arinto de Bucelas.

For all this, and more, Bucelas was always in my “MIRA” (sights) and the desire to reinterpret the region, for all that it was and all that it could be, was always unsettling …

This wine is made with Arinto grapes from two small vineyards. A lowland vineyard in a very cool area with deep clay-limestone soils and another located on a more chalky and sunny hillside. It is a raw and uncompromising approach to the unique “terroir” of this region that revisits artisan winemaking techniques, naked of technology and in search of the purest expression of  the “Arinto de Bucelas”.
